Sri Lanka's Environment Problems 

Sri lanka is a beautiful iland nation in the indian ocean, known for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and diverse wildlife. However, the country is also facing a number of environmental challenges, including -: 

> Deforestation 

Deforestation is one of the most serious environmental problem in Sri Lanka. The country' s forest cover has declined from over 70% in the 19th century to just 22% today. This is due to a number of factors, including logging, slash- and- burn agriculture, and development. Deforestation has a number of negative impacts, including soil erosion, landslides, floods and loss of biodiversity.

> Mangrove degradation

Mangroves are Coastal forest that play an important role in protecting shorelines from erosion and storm surges. They also provide habitat for a variety of fish and other marine life. However, mangroves in Sri Lanka are being threatened by development, pollution and overfishing. Mangrove degradation can lead to increased coastal erosion, loss of biodiversity and decreased fish stocks.

> Coral reef destruction 

Coral reefs are one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, and Sri Lanka is home to some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world. However, coral reefs are being threatened by climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Climate change is causing ocean temperatures to rise, which is bleaching and killing coral reefs. Pollution from land- based sources, sich as sewage and agricultural runoff, is also damaging coral reefs. Overfishing is disrupting the coral reef ecosystem and making it more vulnerable to other threats.

> Soil degradation

Soil degradation is another major environmental problem in Sri Lanka. Soil degradation is caused by a number of factors, including deforestation, overgrazing and the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Soil degradation can lead to decreased crop yields, landslides and flooding.

> Air pollution 

Air pollution is growing problem in sri lanka, especially in urban areas, Air pollution is caused by vehicle emissions, industrial emissions and the burning of fossil fuels. Air  pollution can cause a number of health problems, including respiratory infections, heart disease and cancer.

> Waste management 

Waste management is a challenge in Sri Lanka, especially in rural areas, Much of the country' s waste is not collected or disposed of properly. This can lead to pollution, disease and environmental degradation. 

> Climate change vulnerability 

Sri lanka highly susceptible to climate change's effects, facing extreme weather events like droughts, floods and storms and sea level rise, potentially inundating coastal areas and displacing millions.

The Sri lankan government is taking some steps to address these environmental problems. However, more needs to be done to protect the country' s environment amd ensure a sustainable future for its people.

Here are some things that individuals can do to help address Sri Lanka' s environmental problems:

🌿 Conserve water and avoid polluting water resources.

🌿 Dispose of waste properly and recycle whenever possible.
