Perception and Communication

Perception is the process of Selecting, Organizing, and interpreting information fron our environment. It is a complex process that is influenced by our individual experiences, beliefs, and values. Perception is important in communication because it determines how we understand and respond to the messages we receive.

Communication is the process of exchanging information between two or more people. It can be verbal ( Spoken or Written ) or nonverbal ( body language, facial expressions, tone of voice etc. ) Effective communication requires that both the sender and receiver have a shared understanding of the message.

Perception plays a critical role in communication. The way we perceive a message is influenced by a number of factors, including;

* Our relationship with the sender -: We are more likely to trust and believe messages from people we know and respect.

* Our expectations -: We are more likely to perceive messages in a way that is consistent with our expectations.

* Our cultural background -: Cultural differences can lead to different  interpretations of messages.

* Our emotional state -: When we are feeling strong emotions, we may be more likely to misinterpret messages.

How perception can affect communication

Perception can affect communication in a number of ways. For example -:

* If  we perceive a message as negative, we may be more likely to be defensive or argumentative.

* If we perceive a message as ambiguous, we may fill in the blanks with our own assumptions, which may lead to misunderstandings.

* If we perceive a message as coming from someone who is not credible, we may be less likely to believe it.

How to improve communication

There are a number of things we can do to improve communication and reduce the risk of misunderstandings caused by perception.

• Be Clear and concise in our communication.

• Be awre of our nonverbal cues and make sure they are congruent with our verbal message.

• Be mindful of our audience and tailor our message accordingly.

• Be open to feedback and willing to clarify our message if necessary.

• Be respectful and understanding of the other person's perspective.

Examples of how perception can affect communication.

Here are a few examples of how perception can affect communication.

• A manager may perceive a subordinate' s question as a challenge  to their authority, when the subordinate is simply trying to clarify their instructions.

• A customer may perceive a salesperson' s pitch us pushy, when the salesperson is simply trying to do their job.

• A couple may have an argument because they have different perceptions of what constitutes a " messy " house.

• Two friends may have misunderstanding because they have different cultural backgrounds and interpret facial expressions differently.
